Afternoon thundershowers

Rain over Miami. When I lived in Miami, I noticed that it usually rained there at about 2:37pm each afternoon for about 21 minutes. Here’s a photo of that daily storm taken from several miles offshore…..
Dusk in Deshaies

We just arrived in Deshaies, a little fishing village on the North West coast of Guadeloupe.
There is a different feel to the ex-British Caribbean. This is part of France, it uses the Euro (it is one of the dots on Euro notes).
No Independence, 26% unemployment, 58% of the average Euro zone disposable income.
However, there is a warm, happy atmosphere here.
Very French, the main street has a Boulangerie, a Pattiserie, a Traiteur, a Catholic church, Hotel de Ville and some lovely restaurants.
Ajaccio

Ajaccio, Corsica was the first stop of our second cruise on Navigator of the Seas. It wasn’t the most inspiring stop, despite its rich history, but it was great to be somewhere new, the weather was nice, and there were always delights to return to on Navigator!

According to our guide, that antenna in the upper right hand corner of the photo belongs to the US agency, NOAA which has a weather reporting station here. It is the southeastern most station NOAA has and is instrumental in early hurricane detection and tracking.

This week’s photoblog is another special edition. The photo once again isn’t mine, but it’s one that I processed. Ryan Goodman ran a project asking his readers to revisit and retouch one of his photos. I’m a little late in getting around to doing the project, but the deadline is January 25 — so you still have a bit of time to get an entry in if you’re interested in participating.
West Indian regiment in their camp, France, during World War I

Image by National Library of Scotland
West Indian regiment in their camp, France, during World War I. Half a dozen soldiers are standing in a group in the space between their tents. The tents are canvas cones, most of which have their sides rolled up suggesting that the weather is warm and there is no mud in evidence. Most of their equipment is lying on the ground outside of their tents. The soldiers are all in uniform and looking at the sky. Some of them are shading their eyes with their hats.
